I've heard a different interpretation of that prediction:
The Mayans are believed to have been a very violent people; perhaps a world without violence was inconceivable to them, which made them think December 2012 will be the end of the world -- perhaps it is only the end of violence.
Maybe the Age of Aquarius approaches
