I used to have a landing strip that I would give a little buzz with my beau-of-the-time's beard trimmer. After getting nicked several times I stopped. It happens for the exact reasons Hal mentioned above, only it catches your skin sometimes too. Not fun. Believe you me.
Like Hal said before, oil helps prevent red bumps.
