My wife will point out bruises on my bod and ask me where they came from. I haven't a clue, specifically. But usually I've been working out, so there are two possibilities:
1) Wandering around the weight room I bumped into something hard like a weight rack, or a bar, or something. Everything's hard in a weight room. This kind of bump doesn't really hurt much at the time, but it bruises up later.
2) Burst blood vessels under the skin from going all out on certain exercises. Can happen around the joints, particularly around the knees after a hard leg workout.
Cuts I can't help you with, the only "unknown" cuts I ever had occurred when I was working with stained glass. I was working in an environment where invisible slivers of glass were on every surface. If you didn't keep them brushed off, you'd get a little cut every time you brushed against one of them. And the pieces of glass were so fine that you'd never feel it; only notice it a minute or so later when blood was running down your finger.
