The Sox do finish ahead of the Yankees sometimes. They've finished ahead of the Yankees 33 times, in fact. That's almost once every three seasons! It's just that we weren't born yet for most of them.
Most recent was 1995, when they they won the ALE but were swept in the first round by the Indians. They finished ahead of the Yankees each year from 1988 to 1991, winning the ALE twice but getting swept in the ALCS by the A's twice.
You don't want me to keep going, do you? Because next stop is 1986...
Interestingly enough, the AL East has finished in the same order every year since 1998. NY, BOS, TOR, BAL, TB. They WILL finish again in this order for the sixth year in a row.
