If you wish to buy a used book for example, your should check out the seller's feedback comments left by previous buyers. You'll get a fair indication of the quality of that seller.
I deal with Amazon a lot, have so for several years. Never have had a problem. I would say they are among the most secure Web sites you could deal with.

Just to follow up on this. Even if you do buy something used from a seller on Amazon, you're using Amazon's payment infrastructure so you're still protected.
