you were thinking correctly in the first place, while many of the folks are suggesting very good weapons for their purpose, if you want something for all around use (remember that doesn't mean it's the BEST for each situation but a compromise for each) the go for a 12-gauge.

You can bird hunt, deer hunt (a lot of areas in the east have restrictions on where you can rifle hunt anyway), shoot for enjoyment (clays) and also a good home defense weapon when loaded with the right ammo. Biggest thing as with any weapon, get familiar with it, go out and put several boxes of ammo through it so you feel comfortable with it just in case you would need to use it in an emergency.
