My wife used to pick up guys at bars a lot when she was younger (why was I with her again?) and she always said that one of the tricks she'd use was to back up into a guy "accidentaly". You say something, he says something back with a slight bit of guilt but mainly a gratitude that he doesn't need an excuse to talk to you now.
The best pickup line I've ever used, and the one that has worked most on me, is "Hi." Just start talking! If he's not interested, it will become patently obvious very quickly. Men, despite what women might believe, are the ultimate snubbers/shunners.
Er, but we're not cruel or anything, for the most part. That's just me that's cruel.
