Rubes? or rather "rube's"? When people go out, they don't always carry large sums of cash on them. It's very common these days for people to use check or credit cards. When several people in a group want to pay with plastic, the bill must be split.
If it is that hard of a task, just let me know and I'll take my check card elsewhere.
