check the ground strap that grounds the engine to the frame. on older vehicles, these things tend to rust up and develop heavy electrical resistance. if it looks in good condition, remove each end and clean the end and the place it bolts to.
what do the battery cables look like? if you see lots of corrosion peeking out of the insulation, replace them. corrosion (like rust) leads to resistance (to the flow of electricity).
