hmm....i had a similar problem on a '90 ranger. 4cyl, worst power output ever. But thats besides the point. All of a sudden, i would go to start it, put the key on the "on" position, and i would get power. i would go one more click to "start" and it would go click. then go dead. no power. would hafta disconnect the battery and then reconnect it. Thought it might be the safety switch on the clutch at first. Anyway, turned out to be a bad ground on the battery. The battery might be good, but the a connection is bad it could blow a fuse or somehting and not let it turn over. Somedays the connection might be just enough to let it start, and might jiggle too loose to start the next time.

Its more than likely a electricity FLOW problem, than a part problem or a lack of juice. Double check all your battery cables and grounds on the starter and everything, make sure they aren't frayed or loosely connected.
