Shinto has also changed over the years. Japanese Shintoism incorporates/have previously incorporated the thought of the Japanese people as God's chosen people, and everybody else being inferior. Otherwise, there are many different branches, and has become closer to Chinese ancestor worship than anything else. The majority of Japanese people today identify both Buddism and Shinto as their religions of choice.
As with Chinese traditions, Japanese Shinto can be very confusing for outsiders. Some older people go on trips to special temples to pray to the Toilet Spirit, so that they will keep control of their bodily functions.
Essentially, Shinto is the worship of different spirits in nature. The Japanese government gets in trouble whenever they visit some shrines officially though, due to the strong ties between Shinto and Japan's crimes during WWII.
