Listen to every single word the Range Officer says. Also, relax. Most people get too tense, nervous, and excited, and end up doing something foolish. Clear your mind, let your muscles relax, and realize that even though the tools you're playing with are deadly, they still only do what you tell them to. Finally, recoil isn't nearly as bad as one would imagine it to be.
Have fun, and hopefully your introduction to a particularly expensive, however, rewarding hobby, goes well.
