FX 5900 Ultra
Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know that buying this card is a gamble at the moment. NVIDIA representatives have been quoted saying that a bunch of faulty 5900 Ultras were released to PNY, BFG, eVGA, and Gainward. Well, I bought a new PC from NewEgg with a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra. Yep, I got one of the faulty ones. It makes a terrible buzzing sound when you scroll on a webpage or play games/benchmark tests. On top of that, the screen flickers spontaneously very often.
The rumor is that NVIDIA will NOT be releasing a fix for these two issues, but releasing a FX 5900 Ultra SE that has both issues solved. Those with the older card will not be refunded unless they contact the reseller or store they bought it from.
I've went through TWO of these FX 5900 Ultras and finally decided to RMA my entire PC back to NewEgg because of it. If I'm gonna buy a $500.00 video card, I want performance, not annoying sounds, glitches, and bugs. Either go Radeon 9800 Pro right now, or wait until a fix/solution has been made on the 5900 Ultras. Or you can take a chance and try to get a working FX.
Either way, just wanted to give the heads up before you spend $$$ on RMA costs with the new FX. Good luck!
PS: This card is fucking amazing, even if it does have issues right now. I got about 6,000 on 3d Mark 2003 and about 16,500 on 3d Mark 2001 SE. I know I would have got higher with better RAM, but the 3d Mark 2003 scores really blew me away.
