OK, a couple of points (just to be technical).
1) Gray Davis is not a candidate. Since he is the person being recalled, he is not allowed to run to replace himself The election is actually 2-parts. First, should he be recalled. Then, if he is who should replace him. If he is not recalled, the second question is irrelevant.
2) How is a $5,000 dinner date different from a $1,000 a plate dinner? The difference is that you get to spend dinner alone with her, instead of eating rubber chicken with a few hundred other suckers who get to hear the same speech.
That all said, this process is ludicrous when you consider that he hasn't broken any laws. He's being recalled for buyer's remorse. I guess that's what happens when you can vote for "None of the Above".
