Why don't you just use the standard Windows file sharing feature? I have a quite big home network (1 XP, 2 2Ks, 1 98, 1 Linux) and no probs with file sharing.
Things to check:
-make sure that you have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service installed on both machines
-check the IP address of both machines (I've got static IPs on my private net, so pc1: 192.168.0.1 pc2: 192.168.0.2)
Than simply enter the following address to Windows explorer (on pc1): \\192.168.0.2\c$ (or whatever the share name is) (c$ is the default share on the C drive)
