I personally taught myself photoshop by using the tutorials at deviantart.com, as well as looking through their images and trying to duplicate them...I've found that if my photoshopping is goal-oriented rather than just trying to make something cool, it works a lot better.
Also, if you have the money, do your self a HUGE favor and go buy a $99 Graphire tablet. You'll thank me for it the first time you have to freehand a selection mask.
