HarmlessRabbit, perhaps one nuke would have sufficed. However, suppose the Japanese were to believe it was a one-shot weapon? Then the US would have had to drop the second one after all, with quite a large time between the two. This would have given the Japanese time to prepare (as far as you *can* prepare), and would seriously have weakened the psychological impact.
