Yes, mage did play loose.
But it's the skill of the DM and the players with respect to each that matters.
I like the game, because it emphasized character development
and the flavor of the story.
If you using it for classic Hack & Slash, forgettable it.
Sometimes I like Role-Playing, sometimes I like Hack & Slash
Both have their enjoyment.
Mage is definitely made for "role-playing"
