I always assumed that it was a substitute for "asshole" on message boards, such as fark.com Most message board back-ends (no pun intended) have bad word filters and some, as on fark, even substitute a silly word in place of the offending word. You can type Assh0le too - using a zero for the oh to fool swear filters also. Then again, I guess I could be, and probably am totally wrong. It would be nice to know though. There are whole classes of message board words floating around on fark.
