Living beings are generally sensitive to changes in the environment (
http://www.fitnesspastfifty.com/article1035_2.html). Just as bacteria will react to differences in acidity, insects and mammals can detect differences in macro-weather, such as temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.
Thousands of years of evolution have given creatures a standard but, to us, a strange ability to sense the environment. We, on the other hand, can sense what we need to and, often, nothing more.
