Take a look at thermal specs on the more recent procs and AMD actually comes out on top.

P4 3.0 is 81.9 watts.

Athlon 3000 is 74.3 watts.
Granted, the built in heat protection on the P4 is somewhat nicer than what the Athlon has, but the P4 still runs hotter.
