USB, Hub, Connection problems
Heres the rundown:
Dell Inspiron 4000
One USB port
Win2k
IOGEAR 4-Port USB Hub (so I can have 4 usb ports)
SMC 2662W Wireless USB Adapter (for internet) Version 1
Logitech Quickcam 4000 (Webcam)
=====
Okay, I have used the SMC adapter for wireless in the house for more than 4 months. So far that is not the problem.
I disconnected it, and plugged the IOGEAR USB hub into my only USB port. This is okay so far.
Installed the Logitech Quickcam through a port in the hub. Drivers and everything install fine. I test it out with webcam32 and there is a good preview picture blah blah blah. In other words, YES the webcam works through the hub.
Now to put my wireless adapter back onto my computer so I can finally get a webcam shot on TFP Webcams. PROBLEM STARTS.
Plug it in, and I get the "New Plug and Play Device Found, Wish to install?" dialog. I figure, well, okay. Why not, its on a new port and the computer is most likely stupid. It will want a new driver config so I can use it.
Installed driver.
Attempt to get onto the wireless connection. I can get a signal, but it just does not connect. ESSID is hidden, but I know it. I manually input it. Still cannot make a connection. Dammit.
So, unplug Wireless adapter, unplug hub and webcam. Plug Wireless back into my solitary USB port. Still no connection.
Dammit. Uninstall all drivers for the SMC wireless adapter. Reinstall drivers (yes, after restarting computer). Still nothing. Dammit.
Uninstall "Generic USB Hub" driver that I figure is the Microsoft internal driver for the USB Hub that I stuck in earlier. Try to connect again. Still nothing. Dammit
Now that Hub was uninstalled, time to uninstall/reinstall the wireless drivers. Can still get signal, but no connection is made. Crap. HELP!!!
note: At this point, everything is as it was (in my view) as when it was working the previous day, and earlier in the day. All this took place between 5pm and 8 pm pacific time. Just, not connecting to the home wireless
======
Side notes: USB still works. USB mouse (found it lying around in the house), and webcam are functional.
The only computers that can connect to our home wireless are those with their MAC addresses registered. Our ESSID is hidden.
And stupid me - Didn't back anything up.
