Barry's swing is a big part of it. Until he got to San Francisco he was just an above average hitter. It wasen't until his dad and Baker got him to open up his hips at the plate, that he was able to hit so many home runs. If you have a chance watch ESPN's sunday conversation with Barry Bond and you'll see what I mean. They put a picture of him up swinging with the pirates and a picture of him today, you'll see a dramatic difference.
On the note of Bonds and the media, the Babe was just as ruthless with the media. The only reason you don't see them badmouthing him is because the media penetration isn't the same back then as it was now.
