Isometric Exercises

I havent gone out and searched yet, but does anyone do this type of exerices? I have recently severed my platella tendon basically stuffing up my life for the next 6 months as i was all set to get into the army then i did the leg injury. So at the moment i've opted to work a bit on the upper body - Weights etc. Can anyone tell me if isometric exercises is good for muscle building? and fat loss?.
