Yes, we had contact lenses back then. And although the book is (obviously) older than the movie, I don't know if that exact line is in the book.
Back then, contacts were heavy glass and very expensive, and all of the common jokes of the time concerned people crawling around on the ground at the most inopportune time looking for a lost contact.
