I too thought I could never touch my eyes, but I got contacts about a year ago and got used to it pretty quickly. I like them, but I do generally take my contacts out at the end of the day and put my glasses on -- they get a little uncomfortable after being in for 12+ hours, but other than that I don't even notice them.
One tip I got from the optometrist that's really helped me is to put a couple of drops of solution inside them before putting them in...mine are a lot more comfortable when I do that.
