I've worn contacts for a long time, it's great I'm so non-squeamish about the eye thing. I'm at the point where I can place or remove the contact lens without even holding my eyelid open. I don't care. Eyelash in my eye? Sand? I just dig it out. My optometrist got a new assistant, the one who helps first-timers with contacts, and she freaked when I did that. "I'm jaded".
