Ok, two things to add to this:
Many many years ago when I was in Colorado visiting friends: I was doing the touristy thing, looking at an excavation on the side of the highway (about a quarter mile away, up on a hill). We were getting ready to leave, but wanted to stretch our legs a bit more, so we were walking around looking at the scenery.
Down below on the freeway, we saw a truck with a camper and a dog in the back. The dog jumped out (no idea why) and landed on the road. It immediately started running to the side of the road, and the driver panicked and tried to pull his car off the road. The driver behind the truck yanked the wheel the other way to miss the dog. That driver collided with two cars, the truck flipped upside down, many more cars piled into the back. It ended up involving 16 cars total. All the while, my friends and I are standing a little ways away, getting ringside seats to this.
It was very depressing to see the Flight for Life helicopters come in, medics rush over, and realize there was no way to save most of the people.
The second was on the way to work today. I was zipping down the freeway, as I was a little bit late, when I noticed two things. The first was that there hadn't been any traffic coming in the other direction in the past five minutes, the second was that there was a wall of flashing lights (covering the entire road, and then some) ahead to the other side of the freeway. I get closer and realize that it's a huge wreck.
Somehow a sedan had gotten run over by a gas tanker, turned sidways underneath the rear wheels. My exit was right next to the wreck, so I ended up waiting 20 minutes, staring at it, while trying to exit (traffic was horribly blocked). The sedan was burnt to a crisp, but you could still see blood on the back of the truck, and the gas tank was very badly damaged, but was being hosed down by several firetrucks.
On my way home, about 12 hours later, the tanker was still there, but pulled off to the side of the road and surrounded by concrete barriers. Apparently they were too scared to haul it very far, for fear it might get damaged more. Accidents are scary things.
