One good trimming technique I have found is this:
First, get a brush. Brush it all out, against the grain (read: up) so that it is all standing out. Then get some scissors and cut it as short as you possibly can with them. After that, get a razor, and while dry (if not dry, you run the risk of getting razor burn like its your job) shave down the areas where you want no hair.
