Yes, it's an old word and in olden days (i.e. before 1960) it specifically applied only to women. Women in traditional English/Germanic cultures aren't supposed to enjoy sex.
A woman who does enjoy it (and who has sex for non-mercenary reasons) is dangerous to the "moral upstanding respectable" women of the community. She deprives them of their valuable currency.
If some woman is out there giving it away for free, they can't use sex as effectively as a way of getting what they want from men.
As a woman who enjoys sex, I have no problem being call a slut. When I hear the word "slut" used derisively toward a woman, I'm often am tempted to ask the one saying it, "What? Aren't you getting any?"
Imo, a woman who is proud of not being a slut is depriving herself of one of the simple pleasures of life.
