My eyesight isn't THAT bad but it was getting to the point where seeing a small black puck on the far side of the ice was very difficult. So I made the decision a couple of years ago to get some contacts for sports. It was the best decision I made. It took a bit to get the hang of putting them in but after you get used to that...no difficulty.
I wear my glasses most of the time but if I go for a run or play sports or just want to wear a pair of regular sunglasses I pop in my contacts. I have monthly contacts that you are supposed to throw out after a month or so but I generally stretch them a couple of months at least as I don't really wear them much. If my eyes start getting itchy or they feel scratchy I throw them away. The solution's these days are rub free so you just rinse them and then store them in their container for the night.
The 2 years I had them I didnt' even have the correct prescription for the contacts (astigmatism caused problems) but it was better than it was. Now, I have a much better prescription and would probably wear them more but at nights glasses are so much nicer to wear cause you can easily take them off and fall asleep.
Summary: Contacts are great.
