One of most current uses of the term "asshat" has come about because of Player vs Player combat in MMORPGs ( massive multiplayer role playing games ) named Dark Age of Camelot. When you kill an adversary, it is usually considered insult to injury to change to a sitting pose over the dead characters head ( asshatting ). In the realm of MMORPGs this is kind of like giving them the finger. All very childish to be sure, but it is a variation on why and how the word is used.
