As far as reliability goes, the Japanese Imports beat out the European imports and the Americans by quite a bit. Performance is so varied between different models, but import manufacturers have traditionally done more with less (e.g. price, displacement). Recently lots of the car manufacturers have been borrowing ideas from each other and quality of all cars has improved, so the lines between the different manufacturers are blurring.
