on a sphere, the shortest line from A to B is found on the great circle that connects the two. The great circle is the "equator" of sorts of the sphere--the circle with the largest diameter on the sphere.

This is why all the airplane routes are curved and not straight. But somehow i think they say if you looked at that path in a space-time sense, the route is actually straight.
