AAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
A couple months ago, I realized something. A lot of my friends were using the word "addicting" to refer to things. I payed no attention to it, because my friends are pretty much all idiots
Not too long after, however, I was hearing the word used by everyone, all the time. No matter what was in question in a conversation, it was "addicting." I started to get annoyed.
In just about no time, the word was all over the place. I now saw it all over the internet as well as in real life. Websites had it in their text, in their URL's.... whatever. Every single thing in the whole damn world was being described as "addicting." I was officially pissed off, but I thought it would fade eventually.
BUT NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
It's continued since then, and it reached a point yesterday when I just couldn't stand it anymore --- I saw it on no less than THREE DIFFERENT COMMERCIALS. I felt like my brain was going to cave in upon itself.
Why does this annoy me?
First all, it's the complete overuse of the term. People use it to describe just about everything: games, foods, TV shows, websites, you name it. It's all "addicting." People say it when they don't even mean it. They say it when they just cant think of any other way to describe it and yet they still feel the need to mention it in conversation.
Also, since when is "addicting" even an adjective? Before this whole huge swing of people using the word, the only time I really heard it used was in reference to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco; occasionally food. And even then, the word wasn't "addicting," it was "addictive," and as far as I can tell, that's the word that's SUPPOSED to be used... where this whole "addicting" thing came from is completely beyond me.
Why this annoys me so much, I'm not even so sure myself. For some reason though, it REALLY gets on my nerves and has, since it started, become just about my biggest pet peeve.
Please tell me I'm not alone on this one....
