I have mixed feelings about the police. On the one hand, they have an incredibly difficult and stressful job, and they put themselves in danger to protect the citizenry. You have to admire and respect that.
On the other hand, the job seems to attract some (some, mind you) power-hungry assholes who are more interested in pushing people around than in upholding the laws of the society. A lot of professions attract assholes, but not all of them are professions that involve having a gun and the ability to incarcerate people.
So while I respect the profession, I'm always wary of the police and likely to be suspicious until they've proven they're not the power-hungry asshole type.
P.S. My brother was a skateboarder and so had many run-ins with the cops. He had a bumper sticker that said "bad cop - no donut." I always thought it was kind of funny.
