My parent are both big Earnhart fans they have an enormous collection of memorabilia on display at their businees. They own a diesel repair business and my dad has a set of the Intimidater toolboxes made by Snap-On tool company One is a very large rolling box and the other is a smaller box that sits on top of the big one. The small box has a fancy schrimshawed picture of Dale standing arms folded in front of his car. My folks shop was robbed and the boxes were stolen. when they recovered them they figured whoever had stolen them had just pushed them from the truck instead of unloading them properly because both boxes were badly torqued out of shape. Neither one of them was of any use anymore and the schrimshawed piece was destroyed. The insurance company payed off on the boxes and some other items and took the boxes. My dad took his old smaller box from home to use at the shop.
My mom talked to the insurance people and bought the boxes back for almost nothing. she then took them to a topnotch sheetmetal worker to have them repaired. The problem was that the schrimshawed piece was destroyed. She wrote to the Earnhart Fan Club asking if anyone knew of someone whos box was no good but the schrimshawed piece was good that she could buy and for them to contact her And that she needed it in time for my dad's birthday. On my dads Birthday my mom sent him on an errand and had the shop hands move the tools from his old box to the Now repaired Earnhart box which had been repaired as good as new minus the schrimshawed piece. My dad arrived back at the shop at the same time as the UPS man did. The UPS man had a rather large box from Dale Earnhart my dad opened it and inside was a letter from Dale saying thanks for being a fan and that he was sorry to hear that they had been robbed and included in the box was the number 1 of the series schrimshawed piece that Dale had removed from his personal box. He said that it would be much better in a fans toolbox than in his. Also included was numerous items signed by Dale including t-shirts and pictures. To top it all off there was no charge for any of it.
I liked Dale prior to that but that gesture made him in my eyes the greatest racer in history.
