That was the first NASCAR race I attended. Sitting on the back stretch closer to turn three than the straightaway. We saw the crash and left the track. On the way home we got a phone call from a friend that works in the Emergency Room at Daytona, she told us that Dale was dead, the silence in the truck was awful, three out of five in the truck were huge Dale fans and it was a severe blow for them as it was for the entire sport.
I went on the 5th of July for the first time since that race, and it was different. The race seems a lot tamer without the Intimidator.
