The Replacements did a bad-assed cover of "Cruela DeVille" from 101 Dalmations. Also in the quirky category, Bob Mould did a very nice cover of the theme from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. And while we're in the classic alternative bands, REM's version of "King of the Road" cannot be forgotten.
Dead Kennedys did a bang up job of "Viva Las Vegas" which was revived for the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas soundtrack.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones do mean covers. They do "Detroit Rock City" particularly well. "Enter Sandman" is another good one.
The best cover of all time is the Rolling Stones version of "Satisfaction." It's so signature that most people don't even know it is an Otis Redding song. However, Jimi Hendrix (already noted for great Dylan covers) kicking out "Like a Rolling Stone" live at the Monterey Pop Festival is unbelievable.
