"Threads" is a British movie from the same era as "The Day After". Similar story, nuclear conflagration erupts, UK is wiped out, survivors do their best. 28 Days Later reminded me a lot of that movie, similar feel.
And for books, of course the extended version of Stephen King's "The Stand".
