Porn does tend to drive technology, it's true. And the second most popular book in the West after the popularisation of the printing press was "The Lives of the Saints", which was basically stories about the temptations and sufferings that the more famous and popular saints went through. It was about as saucy as a book could get back in its day.
Porn drove the release of video (which in itself nearly killed the 70's porn industry by lowering production values) by making dirty movies available for people to enjoy in the comfort of their own homes, and it is pretty easy to suggest that porn drove the mid-1990's growth of the internet for the same reasons.
