If it's just between XP and 98, go XP, unless you play DOS games a lot or games like Need for Speed High Stakes. As mentioned above, if going XP, be 110% sure ALL your hardware is fully compatible with XP. If you could get a hold of Windows 2000, add Service Pack 4 and IMHO that would be better than XP.
