one? ONE?!! that's just mean. and impossible. I go to too many concerts to pick just one... are you freakin' crazy?
GN'R - Perkins Palace, Pasadena (r.i.p.) '86/'87 (New Year's Eve)
You just KNEW these guys were gonna be huge. I'd seen them in clubs a few times already but this show really stood out. I remember Adler's arm was broken (but he was running around the stage anyway) and Fred Coury from Cinderella was bangin' the skins. Great f-ing night.
Melissa Etheridge - California Theatre, San Diego '89
First album had just come out; there were maybe 300 people there and I'd seen her in a bar in Long Beach previously, but this was different. She had a BAND now! Oooooh! And they had just come back from their first tour of Europe and had a bunch of new songs to play. "Royal Station" always makes me think of this show...
Neil Young - Greek Theatre, L.A. '90
Freedom tour, he played Rockin' in the Free World twice "cuz I really like this song." 4 encores - people wouldn't budge even when the house lights came up. David & Graham came out and sang "Ohio" with him. Maria frickin' McKee opened for him. Everything about that night was magic.
Toy Matinee - Roxy, L.A. '91
You just had to be there. Both shows, but #2 was better. Kevin Gilbert, Marc Bonilla, Spencer Campbell, Toss Panos and Kevin's girlfriend Sheryl Crow on keys. I stil get chills.
Walden Woods benefit - Universal Amphitheater, L.A. '91
Neil Young, John Fogerty, Roger Waters and Don Henley. Don singing Gilmour's parts on "Comfortably Numb" is something I'll never forget and Neil played from a circle of guitars...and he used all of them. First time I'd ever heard him play "After the Gold Rush" on a pump organ, too. Wow. Just... wow.
Lindsey Buckingham - Coach House, San Juan Capistrano '92
opening of the "Out of the Cradle" tour and the first time anyone heard "Big Love" with just him and an acoustic. It's a staple of Mac shows now, but it was friggin' mind-blowing that night, as was the whole show. 7 guitarists, 2 drummers. never heard Mac songs sound that _full_ before in concert. (the Wiltern show the next week gets an honorable mention)
Brian Setzer Orchestra - The Joint, Las Vegas '98 (New Year's Day)
They blew the doors off the dump, plain and simple.
Mike Keneally/Reeves Gabrels - Baked Potato, Hollywood '01
absolutely smokin'...
Train - House of Blues, L.A. '01
I have _never_ seen that place so in tune with a band before or since.
honorable mention:
I saw Better than Ezra at HoB, L.A. last summer and they got blown off the stage by the opening act, Cowboy Mouth. I'd heard their name before, but never any of their music. I have 4 CDs now. GREAT show! Highly recommend seeing them live...
