Steely Dan: Everything Must Go
I just got this, and I just had to post about it. First off, if you're not a fan of sardonic self-deprecation, stay away. Just about every track on the CD portrays an aging, undesirable lecher who realises it and doesn't really care. Frankly, I love it. There's nothing else like it around. The songs are in the same vein as Two Against Nature, not their earlier stuff. There's no "Cousin Dupree"-like material here, but some of the songs come close. The songs are all jazzy and slightly funky with short refrains and long solos. At the beginning of every song, I thought, "What's going on?", because there's no real thread that you can grab onto. By the end of the song, however, it starts to grab you and you see what it's about. The lyrics in some songs, most notably "Pixeleen", are some of the strangest I've ever heard ("Soaked though on the floor of a noodle shop"), but they make sense, after a while. I don't think Becker should sing, but on the one track where he does, you can see how it makes sense (just listen to "Slang of Ages" - I can't explain it). They're all incredibly gifted, and Fagen plays insturments I've never even heard of before (Rhodes? Clavinet? Wurlitzer"). I'd say that "Things I Miss the Most" and "Pixeleen" are my favorites, although "Everything Must Go" somehow grabs me. In conclusion, I think that this is a great CD. Anyone who liked "Two Against Nature", or who just wants to hear something completely different, should check this out.
Just to show you what I'm talking about with the lyrics, here's the last song on the CD, "Everything Must Go":
It's high time for a walk on the real side
Let's admit the bastards beat us
I move to dissolve the corporation
In a pool of margaritas
So let's switch off all the lights
And light up all the Luckies
Crankin' up the afterglow
<b>'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go</b>
Talk about your major pain and suffering
Now our self-esteem is shattered
Show the world out mighty hidey-ho face
As we go sliding down the ladder
It was sweet up at the top
'Til that ill wind started blowing
Now it's cozy down below
<b>'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go</b>
We gave it our best shot
But keep in mind we got a lot
The sky the moon good food and the weather
First-run movies--does anybody get lucky twice?
Wouldn't it be nice...
Tell me can you dig it Miss Fugazy
Now it's gone from late to later
Frankly I could use a little face time
In the service elevator
And if Dave from Acquisitions
Wants to get in to get in on the action
With his Handicam in tow
<b>Well we're goin' out of business
Everything must go</b>
Can it be the sorry sun is rising
Guess it's time for us to book it
Talk about the famous road not taken
In the end we never took it
And if somewhere on the way
We got a few good licks in
No one's ever gonna know
<b>'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go</b>
---------
I hope that's legal. Anyways, I like the CD a lot. Anyone else listened to it yet? I got the DVD version, but I haven't watched it yet.
