My dad is a homebuilder and builds those big homes like you were working in. I used to do work for him, and usually the expensive stuff does promote aesthetics over function. Hell, in my house we have these fancy doorknobs that look great, but the damn things fall apart all the time. I have never had a cheap brass one fall apart though
