I can see spying as being neccesary, but evil? morally wrong? I don't think so. When gathering intelligence the question of good or evil mostly depends on what's going to be done with the information, in other words, intent.

We were told up front that they would never find out. How can it cause harm? The emotional hurt only happens if they find out which you stated would not happen.

If you're spying, you're not violating a trust. They didn't trust you in the first place, that's why you're spying.
If, for example, they posed for pics and asked you not to show anyone, showing them would be a violation of trust.
