You should take a look at The Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness by Antonio R. Damasio. I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're looking for, but I've read a coulple of chapters and thought it very interesting. One of the chapters deals with the role of memory in consciousness, specifically the case of a man with no short term memory. He could remember his childhood, but he couldn't remember what he did yesterday. (Just like in Memento.) Damasio takes this case to study what role memory plays in human consciousness, etc.
