I live in a small town about 1/2 the way between Edmonton and Calgary. It is an easy drive to either city if I need to get a product or service not offered locally. Ya it's a bit of a pain, but that's one thing I give up for the small town life.
My wife and I just bought a parcel of land out of town, so next year or so we will be living in no town.
Generally speaking this area is known as central Alberta, and is in my opinion a great place to live.
I just got back from a 3 day hiking trip in the rockies and that was great. Basically there is a lot of really cool stuff within a 2 or 2.5 hour drive from my house.
