Have you tried disabling all of Win XP's unnecessary eye candy features? Got the right amount of virtual memory? (common practice is to have about as much VM as actual physical memory). Checked to see you haven't got too many programs that load up upon boot? I find with my windows systems that I really need to reinstall at least once every 12 months to keep it feeling fresh.
