"Measurement"
A man stood, gazing hopelessly
Into the solid darkness of his
own shadow.
He focused so well that all he saw
Was this despair, this black outline
of himself.
And weeping, he saw nothing there,
As it slowly became his reflection.
Now I, standing aside as I
Am now walking a happier path,
Pause, and look behind myself
At this man engrossed in his
own darkness.
Yet, I do not see what he sees...
I do not see the shadow as
Anything more than it truly is.
Here was a man, unable to see;
His shadow was not a reflection,
But truly a measurement of how tall
He stood in the daylight, and I
Knowing his journey to come,
Turn back to my path, and
The joy in the hardships
That await me.
